The Story:
When Meursault was notified of his mother’s death, he left immediately for Marengo, where she had been living in The Home for Aged Persons. He was taken to the room where her coffin had been placed and casually declined the doorkeeper’s offer to unscrew the lid so he could look at her. Meursault spent the night there, drinking coffee, smoking, and chatting with the doorkeeper. The next day, a Friday, he attended the funeral and left immediately afterward to return to Algiers.
