Meursault, the protagonist, is a character who is ostensibly without awareness, except for immediate physical sensations. He is an "outsider," as the title sometimes appears in English, who refuses to play the game of society. There is a gap between what he feels and what goes on around him, and he constantly vacillates between total comprehension and total skepticism.
