Her major conflict arrives at the sudden onset of feelings of freedom and independence after she discovers that her husband, Brently, is dead. She is slightly frightened of these emotions initially, but then fully embraces the freedom that has been instantaneously granted. When Brently comes home, she collapses not over her surprise at him being alive, but at the knowledge that this new freedom and sense of self is able to be taken away as quickly as it was given.
