This poem was included in New Hampshire, published in 1923. Even Frost himself was amazed at the many interpretations of this piece. However, historically, the 1920's was an era of change, a modern America. With that in mind, many of Frost's poems reflect upon nature, far from the city, and the importance of searching for more in life than what can be obtained through materialism, which was rapidly overtaking the United States. Frost is essentially considered a modern poet, using language as it is actually spoken. Thus, "But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep," is a clear example of crisp, concise verse. The man and the horse are shown as able to communicate with each other clearly, as the horse wants a farmhouse, a shelter, and the man still has a journey ahead of him.
