First, the focus on Hagar makes it more likely to address feminist concerns. Second, Hagar's choice of mates defies her father, showing female independence. Third, the focus on Hagar at the end of her life allows the author to address the marginalization (and potential wisdom) of older women. This age allows her a kind of independence, a freedom from being concerned with others' opinions, something that is very feminist.
