Zora Neale Hurston’s short but dazzling career took her from poverty in rural Florida to the life of the literary elite in New York City and back again. She grew up in Eatonville, Florida, the first officially incorporated all-black township in the United States, and a town much like the one in which ‘‘Spunk’’ takes place. She was born on January 7, in a year that has never been verified but was probably 1901.
