Melinda seeks places that will allow her to be anonymous. She finds the old unused janitor's closet and makes it her hideout. When she first enters it, she recognizes that no one has used it for years; so it is a place of safety and anonymity for her. As the school year progresses, the closet also allows Melinda to express her inner changes (through her display of trees and the items that she uses to decorate her space).

You will be able to have your pick on this one. I think that the party that Melinda attends could be a significant event. The rape of Melinda could be another major event because of its naturally traumatic effect. I think Melinda's calling the police to break up the party and the her shunning at the hands of the other kids could constitute two more events. In terms of the conflicts present, I think that Melinda endures a conflict...

Well, Alice struggles to fit through the door and Melinda & Heather struggle to fit in any social class in their high school.
When the caterpillar asks Alice who she is, Alice cannot seem to answer. All she can come up with is that she is a little girl. Alice's struggle with identity compares to Melinda's struggle with her identity.
Cheshire Cat compares to IT. He...

I found the novel to have a refreshingly clear view of what it must feel like to be a teenager (its a long time ago for me, though). The angst over isolation, recognition and rejection: the stomach-wrenching fear of being different. The paragraph

I am Outcast

I know resonates with some of my students, as does the humour of 'THE FIRST TEN LIES THEY TELL YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL'.

When Melinda is raped at a summer party, she stumbles to the phone at the house where the party is and calls the police. She doesn't actually report anything, but the police arrive at the party because of the strange phone call and arrest at least one student's older brother (the party featured underage drinking, no supervision, etc.).
Melinda is not only labeled a snitch, but she has to face the normal persecution of being a freshman. Her...

Melinda's mental issues are beginning to affect her physically - we call this psychosomatic. She describes the physical difficulty she has with speaking in this section of the text-

My throat is always sore, my lips raw. When I wake up in the morning my jaws are clenched so tight I have a headache...Every time I try to talk to my parents or a teacher, I sputter or freeze.

Interestingly she does not always feel this way-

The rich aspect of Anderson's work is that the setting can be literally in any high school. The exact location of the events are in Syracuse, New York, but the issues addressed in the work make it applicable to nearly any setting. Part of the reason for this is that so much of the work takes place in Melinda's psyche and in her own mind. The mental setting is where we as the reader are able to examine the essential conflict of the...
