The rich aspect of Anderson's work is that the setting can be literally in any high school. The exact location of the events are in Syracuse, New York, but the issues addressed in the work make it applicable to nearly any setting. Part of the reason for this is that so much of the work takes place in Melinda's psyche and in her own mind. The mental setting is where we as the reader are able to examine the essential conflict of the...

One of the most compelling characteristics in Melinda is the idea that she is a character who seeks to reclaim her voice. The assault silenced her both literally and figuratively, and this realm of silence is what makes her such a compelling character. Add the assault to the social assault of being "silenced," and Melinda's character is steeped in the literal and symbolic recreation and reclaiming of voice. This is fairly compelling in...

Pleas remember rape is something forced on the victim, against the wishes of victim. I am unable to see a situation where an occurrences like this can be anything but traumatising for the victim, male or female. Perpetrators of rape are not seeking only sexual pleasure, they are also derive psychological pleasure from the feeling of being able to forcibly dominate and humiliate others.
Rape is just one of the ways of physically dominating and...

I would like to diverge from the previous post. I think that the social stigma that is present would complicate the issue of men being raped. I think that the perception of rape victims is that women are the primary victims. While this is true, I think that men do feel a bit of a shame factor in confessing their assaults. This silence, as in women, empowers the aggressors and helps to take away the dignity of the victims. In no way...

IT does happen outside. The previous poster was correct in thinking so. If you look through the chapter when Melinda is finally facing what happened that night, when she rides her bike to the place the party took place, she speaks of the memories. Her mind works over the smells of damp dirt and the leaves in her hair, laying against the tree, of no one being outside to keep it from happening. A large reason she goes outside is that...

I don't have a copy in front of me, but I taught it at the end of this past school year. Go back and read the part where Melinda is sitting outside on the roof of her house, and she finally tells the whole story. I'll check this again, but doesn't she say she was dancing with Andy and they ended up away from everyone else--under the tree? Again, I'll check it, but I think he "danced" her away from the others. She was already drunk, and it...

Its been years since I read this book or did a lesson on it, but if I remember correctly, Melinda was raped at a party by a guy that Heather likes. When Heather and Rachel find out, they sort of stop being her friend. Melinda doesn't talk at all to anyone after that event. The comparison of there three personalities are typical of that age group and status. They are all attention seeking teenagers trying to fit in and be cool with boys. When...
