The Sound and the Fury | Related Titles
Faulkner's short story, "That Evening Sun," which preceded The Sound and the Fury, features Mr. and Mrs. Compson, and the Compson children with Quentin as narrator. Nancy, the Compson's sometime servant and washwoman, is the focus of the story. She has an affair with a white man, gets pregnant by him, and poses a dilemma for her husband, Jesus. If Jesus tries to attack Nancy's seducer, he will probably be lynched; thus, he chooses to leave. Nancy nonetheless fears Jesus will kill her, although in the story he never threatens her.
