Posted by gbeatty on Thursday October 16, 2008 at 5:32 PMBurghardt and Yolande are the two people to whom the book is dedicated. Burghardt was Dubois' son, but he died due to diphtheria. (Dubois thought this was due to not having access to sufficient medical resources due to racial prejudice.) Yolande is his daughter, who lived. That's the source of the dedication "The Lost and the Found." Burghardt was lost. Dubois writes about his feelings in Chapter XI of the book. His emotions over first having a son, then losing a son, are put in historical and social context, and the boy meant much more to him than even a normal son might, because of the circumstances.
