Sophie's Choice focuses on the interrelationships between three characters: Sophie Zawistowska, a Polish Catholic and survivor of Auschwitz; Nathan Landau, her manic-depressive and drug-addicted lover; and Stingo, a young American would-be writer starting out on his career in the Brooklyn of 1947, Stingo overhears the passionate lovemaking between Sophie and Nathan in the room he occupies beneath theirs and becomes fascinated with the mercurial Nathan and the gaunt but sensual Sophie.
