    Pilate's strength is easy to see-- she is fiercely independent, traveled the country with her daughter, helps protect Ruth's unborn daughter, etc.

    Ruth shows her independence by being able to withstand the tough times after her estrangement from her husband, and by protecting her unborn child from Macon's violence. She also shows strength by confronting Hagar.
