There are a couple of things that Bradbury is trying to convey. The poem within the story alludes to one message. The truth of the matter is that nature has been utterly destroyed by the war as indicated by the dog who was once healthy and is now boney and marked with sores. Even though the poem indicates that nature will be happy when man is destroyed, that reality does not come to pass in the story.

There is hope however, in the artificial nature that Bradbury has created through the use of the mechanical mice and the "soft rains" that fall down from the ceiling when the house catches fire. Everything throughout the city is left destroyed except this house, and in the end the house destroys itself as its brain in the attic explodes and ends up destroying that which it was meant to protect. Clearly, neither science or nature will come out the winner in Bradbury's perception in the event of a war.
