A person can have any number of vices ( things you do that are not necessarily good for you) that anyone can ridicule (make fun of or degrade someone). As far as vices concerning health, eating fattening foods when you are overweight is one of the most common. High school students are famous for ridiculing their peers for anything. Being a couch potato, watching too much TV, video games when one is not physical fit or overweight can lead to ridicule. Smoking or doing drugs and alcohol which can lead to all sorts of health and social problems are common vices. Spending too much money on frivolous items when you don't have a lot of money to spend can be a vice that is ridiculed. When health and the economy are major issues this year it is important to examine ones vices and simplify their life, not just to avoid ridicule but also to enhance ones well-being. I have some vices that may not really be considered vices at all. I really enjoy chocolate and coffee. Is chocolate an indulgence or a vice? Coffee contains caffeine a stimulant drug, and I suppose I am addicted because when I have tried to stop coffee, I get intense nasty headaches. So, I continue to drink coffee. I am what some would call oveweight even though I generally walk 3.5 miles every day, work out 30 minutes in the mornings before work, and eat a healthy diet except for the chocolate and coffee. I live in a mobile home and don't have frivolous extras like an ATV or BOAT. I do own a Jeep Wrangler and enjoy driving through the country side with the top down. Is that a vice considering the issues of high gasoline prices and global warming? Maybe driving my Jeep is the biggest vice that I might be ridiculed for during the recent focus on environment and global warming. For the most part, I like to think that I live simply and am environmentally conscious, so that my Jeep rides are not going to cause the end of the world. Should I get out and walk...maybe. I love this question! My students laugh at me daily for my one, true vice that I cannot do without during the school week... My cup of coffee and my Vanilla Milkshake flavored Pop Tarts. :) I don't know what it is, but those two things together are amazing! My other vice is that I work best in clutter. And yes, my colleagues tease me daily (the ones w/ neat desks do anyway!). I tell my students to never EVER leave anything they want to see again on my desk--they have dubbed it the "swirling vortex of doom"--the thing is though that I know EXCATLY where every piece of paper is in that stack! I would have to say that my main vice is talking! I've been teaching for soooo long that it's hard to get out of my "teacher mode" when I get home or go out. I guess it could be worse but it still can be a bit annoying I'm sure to those outside of this very conversational profession. Posted by meelshaw on Mar 12, 2009. |

I would have to say that my one main vice is overeating. I love to eat. It is such a comfort in so many situations. I eat when I'm happy, I eat when I'm sad, I eat when I'm stressed, and I eat to celebrate. Maybe growing up in an Italian family lends itself to this behavior, but I can honestly say that I don't regret it. In fact, just writing this post makes me hungry! I'm not sure that I would get ridiculed for the vice I stated above, but I do know that my vice of cursing is sure to find criticism. I try not to use profanity, but I have to admit that sometimes a good swear word makes things alright. Not happy about that, but that is the truth-- at least for me:) Posted by rshaffer on Mar 12, 2009. |

French fries. I crave them several times a week, and usually act on those cravings. I have no self-control when it comes fries; as a result, I'll probably die of a massive heart attack at age 45 and have my tombstone engraved with my name and the following: "Loving mother, wife and teacher, who refused to stop eating french fries." I get riduculed for this obsession by my family, and by my husband, who is usually the one who makes the midnight "fry runs" for me. But oh, the delicious, crispy slices of heaven, shining in their sheen of grease! I can't give them up! Decluttering: I obsessively declutter, and have caused a few problems when family members ask, 2 months later, "Hey-where's my headphones that I only have used twice in my life but all of a sudden want to use again now that you have thrown them out?" I get made fun of at family functions ("Hurry! Hide your stuff before she sends it to Goodwill!"), and am not invited to certain homes for fear that I will judge their clutter. *sigh* But at least my house is tidy! :) Posted by mrs-campbell on Mar 13, 2009. |

Cadena, can you come de-clutter me? :) I'll give you French Fries.... Seriously, the stuff on my desk at work builds up seemingly of its own accord. I have no idea how I accumulate so much stuff. So far, I haven't misplaced anything vital, but I do consider my clutteriness a vice. In my defense, it is not entirely my fault. I also have too much stuff at home, but I have four kids and it is hard to stay on top on everything. Posted by lynn30k on Mar 13, 2009. |

I have plenty of vices -- I drink too much wine, spend too much time on the computer, sometimes procrastinate, etc. The part that I wanted to address is the ridicule part. When I get teased about these vices, it is always gentle. I know that underneath the person probably really means it in part. However, I've never been truly ridiculed. Actually, I'm usually my own worst critic. I know that caustic ridicule is more common with teenagers, and it can really hurt. If someone is treating you that way, don't just take it. Talk to an adult you trust, or just tell them to knock it off until they are perfect.
