Many developing countries are experiencing this phenomenon right now. China is particularly affected. Pros: Rural to urban migration appears historically to be necessary for industrialization. It appears that this migrations makes a cheap source of labor available to a country's developing industries. In the long run, this can be good for the migrants as well as they tend to have access to better education and job opportunities. Cons: Much of the migrant population is, of course, poor and tends to end up living in slums that have very poor living conditions. In the short term, this causes problems for the society at large and, of course, for the migrants themselves.
