If this topic is for an argumentative paper, you need to take a stance. Examples may be...Abortion has become common in America, and/but(write whether you support it or are against it here). Depending on your beliefs and your support, either way you should be able to come up with many arguments for your paper.

If it is just a researched essay, your thesis would not need take a stance. You would just need to make a factual statement about abortion, depending on the aspect you are going to research. There are many different points about abortion you could research, so once you have that narrowed down, your thesis statement should be easier to write. Ideas for a research paper could be the effects of abortion, the process of abortion, alternatives to abortion, etc.

Your thesis should be an argument or statement followed by three reasons that support that argument. For instance; Abortion is justified because ____, ____, and ____. Or; Abortion is not justified because ____, ____, and ____. Go ahead and start writing your paper. See what research you find, and then craft your thesis as you go along. Don't make evidence fit your thesis statement, make your thesis statement fit the evidence.

I think it is most importantly dependant on your stance on abortion, if you are supporting abortion then your thesis could look something like this:

With the evolving moral standards of society, abortions are becoming more and more justified. Abortions, the practice of removing a fertilized egg from a mother has become a controversial issue in American society, but should be generally supported bcause _________, _____________, and ___________.

If you are opposed to abortions then your thesis could be something along these lines:

Considering American ethics and values, death is morally wrong. Therefore, the killing of unborn fetuses is morally wrong as well. Abortions, this unethical practice of terminated unborn fetuses should be outlawed because ___________, ____________, and __________.

Agree with prior comments, you need to decide on a stance. If you are for or against abortion, a common thesis includes three supporting points for your stance. So pick three reasons why you are for or against abortion.

  1. first of all abrotion is murder!
  2. anybody that has do do with it needs to be put in jail
  3. its says in the bible thy shall not kill and abortion kills an unborn baby so there for its an obomenation in the eye of the lord
  4. i dont see the difference between someone getting shot and going to jail and someone having an abortion and killing a baby

All they were asking for was for help on a thesis, they never did say whether they were against or for abortion. So please do calm down.

Just as an FYI:

Your thesis should be a single sentence no longer then 25 words. You could also start the thesis with a counter argument.

Although many believe in prochoice, Roe vs Wade should be overturned because ......

In reply to #6: until a baby is able to live on its own it is a parasite and abortion is not much unlike removing a tape worm

the bible can not be used in a argument to criminalize anything in the U.S. religion has been irrelevant sense the creation of our government

You mention that you need a strong complex sentence. Of all the advice, #8 gives the best example of a complex sentence. In addition s/he has also addressed the need to be clear and concise in your thesis while acknowledging those you know will disagree with your stance.

While your thesis should drive your paper, you do not have to lay out all of your main points in your thesis, and if you do, it might have a tendency to be too didactic. A well written thesis can set up your intent without obviously stating the main points you are trying to prove. In addition three main points would be a minimum, but it is quite possible that you might have more than three main points. Too many people stifle their voice and creativity by trying to stick to some formulaic ideas such as a “traditional 5-paragraph essay.”

Please understand your thesis is your opinion or what you are being asked to prove. Be assertive; state your opinion as fact because it is a fact, and you will prove it with the research you provide.
