As the reporter for the island of San Piedro, Ishmael is covering the murder trial. He is a native of the island, thirty-one years old, tall, with a hardened expression. Ishmael's father, Arthur (who is deceased at the time of the trial), started the town's newspaper many years ago, so the boy learned the trade from his father.
