In the short story 'The Sniper' by Liam O' Flaherty there are least two interpretations for the term 'brother.' As well as being brothers by blood, many of the Irish freedom fighters in Ireland at the time of the Easter Rising owed their heritage to the 'Fenian Brotherhood.' Strangely enough, many of the United Irishmen of the century before were not even Irish, let alone Catholic. They were fair-minded professional men, some anglo-irish and...

The word "brother" can be interpreted in different ways, but I don't think it really changes "The Sniper's" theme much. When we are looking for a theme, we are looking for the author's message that is understood by reading the story. Sometimes that is easy and sometimes it is hard (and sometimes there really isn't much of a theme.) "The Sniper," though, falls under the category of "easy" (largely because of that last line.) The story,...

The author of the short story "The Sniper" (Liam O Flaherty) may have many reasons for the anonymity of his characters. He may have chosen to make this decision deliberately. Firstly, the anonymity adds realism - the fact that the characters have no names reflects real life in the building of a revolutionary or terrorist force. One way that a fighting group with small numbers can compete with a huge and mighty force (the British army) is to...

There are two types of conflict portrayed in the short story 'The Sniper' by Liam O'Flaherty. The first is the conflict on the roof between the two fighters. The main character in the story ends that one by shooting his opponent - the irony is that that reveals another conflict in the fact that the opponent is his own brother. That in turn resolves another conflict as it means that, unless there was a mistake, the brother must have been...

The Sniper isn't a traditional plot line in that there is a conflict and a resolution. It is a surprise ending that heightens the message in the story--that war is senseless because if all the death and destruction. It is horrific for a feeling man to have to kill and then, at the worst moment, when he sees he has killed his brother, it makes the tragedy of war even worse.
If I were to pin down the most critical moment in the story, I would...

The main theme of 'The Sniper' can be read as commenting on 'Division.' Another word for this in political terms is 'Partition.' We have seen in other countries besides ireland how bloody, painful and divisive political partition of a country can be. India and Pakistan endured a bloodbath after the leaving of the British.
In this short story 'The Sniper' the division is brought home to us in a truly shocking way. Many families had members who...

The main theme is of civil war in "The Sniper." The story's setting is Dublin, Ireland. It is the Irish Civil War that began in 1922, after the Irish Parliament voted to divide the island of Ireland into the north & south. Before this treaty was passed the Irish were on the same side aginst the British, now they split against each other. They even fought against their friends and family.
The main character of the story is quite distraught...

First, we would have to have evidence that "the Sniper" did feel bad about killing people. I don't think that the evidence in the story supports this idea. "The head fell heavily on the turret wall. The woman darted toward the side street. The sniper fired again. The woman whirled round and fell with a shriek into the gutter." Here, "the Sniper" shoots the old woman as she runs across the street. Granted, she was an informant and had...

In the short story "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty, the author's main aim is to create two effects, firstly suspense and secondly, shock! To name or identify the main characters would dissipate the denoument and ending. instead he chooses to give a slightly cool, detached objective mood to the story - as if it is a disinterested bystander narrating rather than two protagonists taking part, allied in blood. This gives the piece a curious sense...

"His forearm was dead. "I'm hit," he muttered."

Notice how he doesn't get frantic or start screaming or crying or whatever. He calmly thinking to himself, "I'm hit." A very cool customer, this fella is. Pragmatic and practical.

"The blood was oozing through the sleeve of his coat....
