What is a good thesis statement for a research paper on comparing and contrasting private vs public colleges?

That would depend on how long your paper has to be. A longer paper would require a more general thesis statement than a shorter paper.
A good thesis should do 4 things: focus on ONE central point or issue, reflect what is to come in the paper, be tailored to the length of the paper, and be concise.
With that being said, you would want to decide what the purpose of your essay is, first of all. Decide if you have a preference of one over the other, and if not, your thesis should reflect that (or reflect your preference, if you have one). Obviously, in your paper, you would want to focus on things to compare and contrast, like cost, student body size, professor to student ratio, financial aid availability, etc.
