The Story:
Kurt Vonnegut and Bernard V. O’Hare went back to Dresden, Germany, on Guggenheim money in 1967. Before they left, Vonnegut went to O’Hare’s house and met his wife, Mary O’Hare. Mary was mad at Vonnegut; she knew he was going to write a book about World War II, and she was sure he was going to make war look glamorous and fun. Vonnegut insisted that he was not going to write a book that made war look glamorous, he would even subtitle the book “The Children’s Crusade.” This made her like him, and they started being friends.
