I would say that the basketball game between Slam's current and former school, Latimer vs. Carver at the state tournament,  represents a critical scene in the book.  It highlights the showdown aspect that is played out in Slam, himself.  He has to confront the past (his former school), with the understanding of who he is in his current setting.  The person he is confronts the person he was/ could have been.  He is also confronting his best friend in the process and this has dramatic implications as well because the entirety of the novel was driven by his changes, his understandings, and the new set of principles he has towards his identity.  Finally, the fact that this confrontation takes place on the basketball court, where so much of Slam's emotional compass is located makes this particular scene extremely important and powerful.
