"The Sky Is Gray" demonstrates a number of ideas. From the viewpoint of the child, the narrator, it dramatizes the problems that African-Americans face as a minority group: poverty, hunger, hardship, and systematic discrimination. It also dramatizes most of the views and solutions that have been raised about racial problems in the United States: passivity, denial, religious refuge, and militancy. The elderly couple who shelter and feed the narrator and his mother demonstrate the idea that kindness and compassion are values that transcend political problems and solutions.
