The first example I have is as Gawain replaces King Arthur's place at the beheading game with the green knight. Another is his being noble and loyal to his lord..etc. Is this another example of chivarly: When Gawain goes on his quest a year and a day later and ends up staying at the castle and does not sleep with the women or wants to take anything from her( even though he takes the green girdle)? I need one more and am not sure what it is. Can someone help me out or give me a hint? Hopefully, so far I'm on the right track. Posted by pixieprincess169 on Jan 30, 2009. |

You are very much on the right track. When Bertilak comes back from hunting, he hands over the stag that he has killed as he promised he would. In return, Gawain gives the kiss he received from his wife. Both men show chivalry here, but especially Gawain. He didn't have to admit to receiving a kiss. After his second hunt, Bertilak comes back with a boar. In return, Gawain gives him the 2 kisses he received. He then refuses his wife's advances continually. All of these plus your info will be good examples. Posted by troutmiller on Jan 30, 2009. |

Here is another instance of chilvarous behavior: In Part 3, Sir Gawain conceals the green girdle that the host's wife gives him because he values his life over honesty. However, he does later confess his sin and wears the green girdle as a symbol of this transgression. Thus, since he repents in such an honorable way, his one indiscretion ends up as another example of his integrity. Posted by mwestwood on Jan 30, 2009. |

In addition, after the Green Knight has forgiven Gawain for his concealment (the GK considers this a lie) of the green girdle, and Gawain asks for forgiveness, the GK and Gawain both recognize the other's gentlemanly qualities and they agree to dine together on New Year's Eve in the years to come. It is an agreement between men of the same chivalric background and belief system. Posted by amy-lepore on Jan 31, 2009. |
