   This story was originally published in a book titled "The Collected Stories of Conrad Aiken" in 1934. That book is now out of print, but you may be able to find a used copy at Amazon or Alibris or another bookseller. This story has  been adapted into a play, which is available at Amazon, and it was used for an episode of the old "Night Gallery" series in the 1970s; this series was produced and presented by Rod Serling, who also created "The Twilight Zone." It might be interesting to read the story and then watch the TV version.
