I've repeatedly said that horror fiction, like comedy, is often in the business of going too far and speaking the unspeakable. This is the simple truth, but my stating it shouldn't be taken as an endorsement of every excess, especially when some writers use it (I was going to say "quote it", but I'm sure that would be to overestimate my influence) to justify their intemperance.
