What are some pieces of advice or topics that Orwell might discuss in today's classroom? What would he think of our society? Posted by mariad616 on Feb 29, 2008. |
Shooting an Elephant Group

This question is better suited for the discussion board, but here goes. . . If George Orwell, the author of the story, were to come talk to any class in this day and age he would advocate, I think, for people to be wary of government. Most of what he wrote that was successful was political satire. Shooting an Elephant, Animal Farm, 1984- to name a few. He would certainly talk about the dangers of giving the government too much power over the lives of the people it governed because he grew up during World War II and experienced totalitarianism in its worst form. If he could experience American culture today I think he would be stunned to see how close he came to getting it right when he wrote 1984. See the eNotes link below for more information about Orwell's life. Posted by clane on Feb 29, 2008. |
