Ray's brother-in-law, Mark, is a professor at the University of Iowa, specializing in all aspects of the corn weevil situation.  His business partner is a guy named Bluestein, and together they own quite a lot of property, both apartments and farmland.  Mark desperately wants to buy Ray's farm, and for awhile, it looks like he may be able to get it done; over the three baseball seasons it takes Ray to building the baseball field, his financial situation is steadily deteriorating.  However, at the end, a clever friend who shares Ray's love of baseball devises a way for Ray to pay off his debts while he keeps his "field of dreams."
