Question:
There is definite religious or moral theme(s) in "Shane". State some parallels between characters, events, etc, which show the connections.
Although Shane is primarily a coming of age novel, there are several moral themes in the book. The first represented by the tree stump which Joe has been trying to uproot for quite a while. Once Shane arrives, the two are able to uproot the tree together. This mirrors the Biblical idea in Proverbs 27:17: "Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another." Thus the theme of the necessity of working together in order to succeed is established. Other themes include a moral lesson against violence. Shane does not carry a gun and the only time he uses one, he feels guilty about it. The moral themes also include loyalty, as demonstrated by the way Joe and Shane stick together and true love. While it is evident Shane has feelings for Marion, he never shows them or lets his feeling come between himself and Joe.
