Shane is the classic American western for several reasons. First and most simply, the setting and conflict. Wyoming was very much the far west, and the cattle business is one of the core industries driving conflicts in western novels.  Second, Shane's character. He is competent, powerfully so, and skilled with work and violence alike. Third, Shane's relationship to the community. He's a solitary outsider, but he recognizes the value of the community.
