In a word, hard. Life was hard enough already in this time, what with war, the threat of poverty, and plague moving through the land periodically. To strip away a child's primary chance of protection, advancement, and education is to leave him or her at the whims of fate. The most likely results in the country would be to be adopted by another family member (if he or she was lucky), such as an uncle who owned a farm. In the city, the likely end is begging and therefore a criminal and risky life.
