“THE WEAKER VESSEL”

“THE WEAKER VESSEL,” an unflattering phrase applied to females in three Shakespeare plays, is proverbial from 1576, and seems based on a verse from the first epistle of Peter 3:7, which reads, in the King James version (1611): “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel…”
