“AS SOUND AS A BELL,” as Don Pedro puts it in Much Ado about Nothing (Act 3, scene 2), was also proverbial; it had already been used by, for example, Thomas Newton in a 1576 translation from the Latin: “They be people commonly healthy, and as sounde as a bell.”
