Shakespeare A to Z | Twelfth Night

Written around 1600, Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s socalled middle comedies. Like other comedies from the middle of the playwright’s career, it focuses on a clever and appealing heroine who challenges the traditional views of women in Elizabethan England. The humor in the play centers on a combination of absurd situations and witty wordplay. At the same time, the drama has a serious side that hints at the pessimism of Shakespeare’s late comedies (sometimes known as the problem plays).
