Transportation during Shakespeare’s lifetime was difficult, slow, and expensive. Most of England’s roads were little more than dirt paths that turned to mud when it rained. Because England is an island nation, travel to foreign lands was even more difficult. Despite these hardships travel was common. Farmers and merchants regularly transported their goods to markets, and wealthy young men traveled to France, Italy, Germany, and other parts of the world to complete their education.
