Shakespeare A to Z | Rape of Lucrece, The

An early poem by Shakespeare, The Rape of Lucrece is based on a well-known story from ancient Rome about the wife of a Roman general who is raped by the king’s son. The lengthy narrative is written in a verse form called rhyme royal, which consists of seven-line stanzas*.
