Shakespeare A to Z | Prospero
Prospero is a magician and the ruler of the island that serves as the setting for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Once the duke of Milan in what is now Italy, Prospero neglected his governing duties in order to study the “liberal arts.” As a result he was deposed by his brother, Antonio, who was aided in his revolt by King Alonso of Naples. After being set adrift in a small boat, Prospero and his two-year-old daughter, Miranda, eventually found themselves on an island inhabited by Ariel (the sprite who serves Prospero) and Caliban (the half-human monster whom Prospero enslaves).
