The first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays—and one of the most famous books in the world—is known as the First Folio. Because Shakespeare wrote his plays primarily to be performed rather than read, they were not collected and published until 1623, seven years after his death. The word folio refers to a printing format that consisted of large sheets of paper, each folded once in the middle and yielding four pages.
