Desdemona is a tragic and heroic figure in Shakespeare’s play Othello. After marrying Othello, a Moorish* general in the service of the Italian city of Venice, Desdemona is unjustly accused of adultery and murdered by her jealous husband. Too late, Othello discovers Desdemona’s innocence and realizes that he had been fooled into doubting his wife’s faithfulness by the lies of IAGO, an officer in his army and a supposed friend. Because of the virtues Desdemona demonstrates throughout her ordeal, she is considered to be one of the greatest heroines in Shakespeare’s works.
