English architecture changed dramatically during the late 1500s, both in the types of materials used and in the designs of buildings. These changes were largely the result of a halt to the English civil wars in the late 1400s. Peace meant that nobles no longer needed to build homes with thick protective walls and narrow windows. Peace also brought prosperity, which led many people to seek a more comfortable lifestyle as well as a way to show off their newfound wealth. Quite a few of them did so by making improvements to their old houses or by building newer, larger, and more elaborate ones....
