English agriculture in Shakespeare’s day centered on sheep and grain. The woodlands in the north and west of England were mostly pastoral* regions. Lightly forested, with sections of meadow for pasturing sheep, these areas also provided game* and feed (such as acorns) for pigs and other animals. The population was scattered in tiny, isolated villages. In the lower and drier regions to the south and east, grain growing was the main agricultural activity. The population in these regions was denser, occupying larger villages and towns.
