Performances of Shakespeare’s works in the modern era are dramatically different from the performances of Shakespeare’s time. The most significant change may be the presence of women on the stage, rather than the boy actors who formerly played the female roles. In addition, directors play a large role in modern productions, whereas Elizabethan productions generally had little or no direction. New technology and changing conventions* of stage production have also altered the way in which modern companies of actors present Shakespeare’s plays.
