An extremely popular poet in Augustan Rome, Sextus Propertius brought to perfection the
love elegy form which flourished briefly in Rome
in the late first century b.c.e. Clearly influenced by the poetry of Catullus and the elegies of such contemporary poets as Calvus
and Gallus, whose works are now lost, Propertius claimed in his poetry to have imitated the style
