Question:
How can Austen justify Robert's engagement to Lucy when L. was considered unsuitable/inferior to Edward by Mrs F?
How can Mrs Ferrars allow Lucy's engagement to Robert (who will get Edward's fortune and so is now fit for a 'social-suitable match', if she disinherits Ed. for being engaged to the same unsuitable girl? Lucy cannot suddenly become a suitable social match for Robert just because he now will inherit the fortune; that is, she was considered wholly unsuitable when Edward was to inherit the same fortune. Is this merely a convenient literary device?
