The Story:
Tommy Wilhelm descended from the twenty-third floor of the Gloriana Hotel and entered the lobby in search of his father. At the reception desk he collected the mail, bought a newspaper, and was told that his father, Dr. Adler, was already in the dining room having breakfast. Tommy was bracing himself to meet his father; a host of recollections burst upon him. He was painfully aware of his father’s contempt for him.
