Mitty's conflict in this story is internal. He wants to lead an exciting and dangerous life, wants to be a leader, but he is trapped by his own weaknesses and the life he has chosen. He is submissive to his wife and boss, soft-spoken, and lives his days just trying to keep up with his responsibilities, unhappy. The quote "things close in" refers to the feeling that Mitty has of being trapped in his world, not being able to escape the mundane day to day events.
