August became interested in the bees as a youngster.  She and her sisters would spend their summers with "Big Mama," their maternal grandmother.  August tells Lily, "I loved richmond, but my heart was always right here,' she said. "Growing up, I couldn't wait to get here and spend the summers, and when Big Mama died, she left all this property to me, June, and May.  I've been here keeping bees nearly eighteen years now." (pg 144).  Because she grew up spending so much time with her grandmother and because she loved her grandmother so much, it was a natural progression for her to take over the same love of bee-keeping that her "Big Mama" had toward the bees.
