Will Barrett, the central character of The Last Gentleman (1966), is also the central character of The Second Coming (Percy wryly observed "the title refers to that, among other things"). Will, although older than in the earlier novel, is still a typical Percy hero: able to manage, but confused about what to do about life. The surprise of the novel is Allison.
