Seamus Heaney (b.1939) is a very famous Irish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1995. His father owned and worked a small farm of fifty acres in Derry, Northern Ireland. This poem "Digging" is located in Ireland and is inspired by the poet's close association with the rural county Derry where much of his poetry is still grounded.

Potato was the staple crop of Ireland and references to it help to locate the poem in Ireland:"potato drills," and "potato mold." Similarly, "Toner's bog" is a very famous bog in Derry, Ireland .
