In chapter 23 of "The Sea-Wolf," Hump is dreaming of how to escape with Ms. Brewster from Wolf Larsen.  He wants to leave the hunt and the ship and return home.  Near the end of the chapter he realizes that he is in love with Maud and almost can't believe it.  He talks about how he never thought it would happen to him because of his "bookish" personality.  He describes being in love as being in ecstasy.

"I could not believe.  I could not be so fortuante.  It was too good, to good to be true." (page 216 of "The Sea-Wolf")
