Your question is general to the fact that each protagonist is different in each story. However, the protagonist does in each story help guide the plot. It all depends on the decisions/the directions inwhich the author takes the protagonist to guide the story. The protagonist is usually the hero. To achieve the specific goal in the story there is always some form of negitive force that the protagonist must over come.

"Humphrey van Weyden and Wolf Larsen of "The Sea-Wolf"are complementary opposites." Humphrey van Weyden is the protagonist in this novel by Jack London. He is a bookish, non-physical man who has high standards and high morals. Wolf Larsen is the antagonist. He is mean hateful and seems unable to feel compassion for any human being other than himself. Wolf Larsen rescues Weyden after a ship-wreck and then proceeds to push him into...

The story takes place at sea, starting specifically in the Pacific Ocean, where our somewhat weak protagonist Humphrey van Weyden is aboard a San Francisco ferry. When the ferry crashes, van Weyden is picked up by a fishing schooner, the Ghost. It is aboard the Ghost that the "city boy" van Weyden learns to be strong. London portrays that idea of strength as being able to survive in nature, in the elements. Van Weyden learns skills of...
