School Spirit
Because sports do not have as strong of a presence at Scripps as at many large schools, school spirit is not typically characterized and expressed through teams, and most sporting events do not attract large crowds. Rather, students are very involved in the school and are constantly active in running and improving it. Many students comment that they show their school spirit through the way that they influence the outside world and through the changes that they can make in their lives.
School spirit at Scripps is not blatant or rowdy, but there is clear love and loyalty. Traditions are upheld and respected, and students truly feel that the school is theirs. Students show off unique signature Scripps gear and the student store sells endearing objects with prints such as “Women on Top,” “My sister goes to Scripps,” or “My girlfriend goes to Scripps.”
As a consortium, all five colleges share a sense of Claremont pride, and the group is often referred to with the stereotype of the characters of the cartoon Scooby Doo. Students may criticize and poke fun at the other campuses and Claremont in general, but they become vehemently defensive if such comments are made by people outside of Claremont.
